Fantasy Football Impact of Recent Cuts
With Free Agency now just a week away, many NFL teams are cleaning house. Fantasy TIP takes a look at the fantasy football impact of a few of these moves.
Team Defense - Denver Broncos
The new Head Coach/GM combo of Josh McDaniels and Brian Xanders is resulting in a massive purge of the Broncos defense. Gone are CB Dre Bly, DE John Engleberger, LB Jamie Winborn, DT Dwayne Robertson and S Marquand Manuel. Now while these were members of the worst Broncos defensive unit since the late 1960's, they were all starters. It clears a ton of cap space but clearly, the Orange Crush is in rebuilding mode. At this point, the Broncos D is undraftable for your 2009 fantasy squad.
Running Back - Jacksonville Jaguars
Gone is RB Fred Taylor, after a terrific 11-year Jags career. While Taylor will probably resume his pedestrian production somewhere else in the league for another year or two, Maurice Jones-Drew will sop up his carries back in Jacksonville. MJD is too small to be a workhorse back, so expect JAX to split some of his carries with another back, but there's no question that he's suddenly a top 10 fantasy football prospect.
Quarterback - Tampa Bay Buccaneers
This week, the Bucs informed QB Jeff Garcia that they no longer require his services. But the fantasy impact on both sides is minimal. Garcia will likely land on a team desperate for QB help sometime over the summer, while the production that TBY gets from either Luke McCown or Brian Griese will be similar to what Garcia had been delivering.
Quarterback - New York Jets
Brett Favre is officially done (yeah, sure). And assuming he stays in Mississippi instead of shocking the world by un-retiring yet again, the Jets could be headed for a rough fantasy season in 2009. While Favre really tailed off down the stretch, there's no question he lifted the fantasy production of everyone around him while he was in the Big Apple. The Jets won't be able to get free agent Matt Cassell from their AFC East division rivals in New England. And they probably don't have the arsenal to trade up in the Draft for either Matt Stafford (Georgia) or Mark Sanchez (USC). So you're looking at either a veteran journeyman, a mid-level rookie or Kellen Clemens. Take RB's Thomas Jones & Leon Washington, WR's Laveranues Coles & Jericho Cotchery and TE Dustin Keller all down about 20-25% in production.
Wide Receiver - Arizona Cardinals
It appears that WR Anquan Boldin's days in the desert may finally be coming to a close. Without his fellow Pro-Bowler lining up opposite of him, WR Larry Fitzgerald will see a lot more double teams. He’ll still get his but it might have to work even harder to match his 2008 numbers. Losing Boldin also impacts the Cardinals QB, whether it’s Kurt Warner or Matt Leinart. Additionally, if Boldin leaves, the Cards may be forced to address the position early in the draft, versus perhaps adding a young running back. That could mean a continued look at whether RB Tim Hightower can be the answer in Phoenix.
