Nine really random things and whatever else is going on around the NFL… 20 May 2012, 12:05
In the newspaper world, the football coverage for Sunday's paper is in the form of a notes package. In the internet world, we can do notes, too. I've been trying to come up with some kinda feature for Sunday on the blog, and I may tweak this going forward. -
The Jets and their safeties take another step forward in trying to stop the Patriots… 19 May 2012, 09:37
The Jets spent last offseason watching from their couches or golf courses while the rival Patriots made a Super Bowl run. And everywhere you turned, the attention wasn’t just on Tom Brady or Bill Belichick. The spotlight was on tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez, the dynamic duo that was such a major part of one of the NFL’s best offenses. In fact, I probably said the word “Gronkle” 800 times leading up to Super Bowl XLVI. The Jets haven’t done a ton in free agency… but what they have done appears to be with an eye toward stopping the TEs. I don’t know if it’ll work, but it seems that’s the idea. There was another example yesterday when [...] -
My story: Examining the cautionary tales and Patriots WR Wes Welker’s future 18 May 2012, 12:17
The debate over Patriots WR Wes Welker’s future is raging. He signed his franchise tender, but then spoke out about how poorly the negotiations are going. Few don’t believe Welker is worth big money for his production now. But it’s when you get a little bit into the future when it gets dicey. Welker is, after all, 31 years old, and he has taken a lot of hits. He plays fearlessly over the middle, which may be why he’s been beat up. In discussing a possible extension, it may be instructive to look into the past. That’s what I did, examining the last two slot receivers who have starred for coach Bill Belichick — Wayne Chrebet and Troy Brown. Are [...] -
Why do I care that Giants legend Lawrence Taylor’s Super Bowl ring is for sale? 18 May 2012, 10:45
I was upset yesterday when I heard the news that Giants legendary LB Lawrence Taylor was selling his Super Bowl ring. We found out today that it’s really his son doing so without Taylor’s knowledge… and my outlook hasn’t changed. It still kinda sucks. Why do I care if LT sells his Super Bowl ring? I don’t know LT. Never met him, never interviewed him. I did watch him a lot as a kid growing up in New York, though, and that was fun. But he was never one of my favorite players or anything. And what he’s gone through over the past couple years off the field hasn’t done wonders for his public image. So I’ve wrestled it around [...] -
Three and out: Eagles lock up LeSean McCoy 18 May 2012, 07:38
The Eagles have locked up LeSean McCoy, a top-five fantasy pick in 2012, to a long-term contract extension. -
Can George Clooney and Kim Kardashian officiate NFL games? 17 May 2012, 14:10
Up until this week, I thought competitions involving talented people trying to beat one another in something was about the people actually competing. But it's not. -
Why the Saints suspensions will actually help QB Drew Brees in his fight for a new contract… 17 May 2012, 14:01
This may sound a little weird… The Saints suspensions — from coach Sean Payton to GM Mickey Loomis to the players — have hurt the team. No doubt. Two key parts who built the team won’t be involved in some or all of the 2012 season, and a few players are appealing that reality, too. Some, as in the case of Jonathan Vilma, are doing so vehemently. And then there is QB Drew Brees. Hit with the exclusive version of the franchise tag, without a long-term contract, Brees is a little pissed. He didn’t mind saying so. And his comments haven’t led to any contract movement, Steve Wyche reports. Brees hasn’t said whether he’ll sign the tag if it’s that or [...] -
Wait, Seahawks QB Russell Wilson is short? We should build a support group… 17 May 2012, 10:04
The Seahawks thought enough of Russell Wilson at rookie mini-camp to thrust him into competition for the starting QB job. Yes, even after signing free agent Matt Flynn earlier in the year. But as colleague Albert Breer tells us, little is settled with Seattle’s situation under center. That puts Wilson in an interesting position. Coach Pete Carroll has shown a propensity for allowing rookies (and freshman at USC) to thrive, and this could be another instance of that. He also loves open competitions. But here’s the thing about Wilson… he’s short. Oh, didn’t you hear? Really short. Like, 5-foot-11 (gasp!) I know, I know, it’s amazing they even let him play football at that height. It’s a charge that dogged [...] -
Three and out: Britt’s has second knee operation 17 May 2012, 09:06
Kenny Britt's second knee surgery in less than one year shouldn't have fantasy owners too worried about his 2012 value. -
Three and out: Jones-Drew skipping OTAs 16 May 2012, 10:07
Maurice Jones-Drew will be skipping OTAs, but I'm not worried about him losing fantasy value. At least not just yet. -
So, your team won just a few games last year… any chance of making the playoffs this year? 16 May 2012, 08:06
If you're interested in the Dolphins (six wins in 2011), Bills (six), Browns (four), Jaguars (five), Colts (two), Redskins (five), Vikings (three), Panthers (six), Bucs (four) and Rams (two), there is historical precedence to hope for a 2012 turnaround. -
Why Patriots WR Wes Welker played the only hand he could in signing his franchise tag 15 May 2012, 14:07
Patriots WR Wes Welker officially signed the franchise tender Tuesday, calling it a "leap of faith." I'll call it something else -- his best option. -
My story: Using the Giants as inspiration, the Rams are searching for dominant units 15 May 2012, 11:28
Usually you hear teams, especially the bad ones, looking to build one player at a time. They talk about increasing depth across the board and getting talent everywhere. Well, the Rams might not consider themselves to be rebuilding, but they are definitely doing some renovations. Yet, as GM Les Snead told me in his office last week, they have an interesting way of thinking about it. Instead of looking to even out the roster and add skill at positions of need, he’s hoping to create dominant units first. Kind of like the Giants, how they keep re-stocking their already nasty defensive line. It’s why St. Louis added Michael Brockers to an already solid defensive line in the first round and [...] -
Three and out: Bush wants to win rushing title 15 May 2012, 10:07
Reggie Bush wants to win the rushing title in 2012. I like the motivation, but he still has a lot to prove in fantasy land. -
Recapping this road trip: The Baltimore edition 14 May 2012, 14:09
Well, check off another first. On Friday, I made my first visit to St. Louis and the Rams facility. Yesterday, the scene was Owings Mills, Md., where the Ravens practice. If you haven’t seen the castle, it’s a sight to behold. It would be tough for me to imagine a more scenic spot to hold a football practice. Also, they have a putting green out front. Awesome. Speaking of football, this is what I said on TV about the Ravens rookie mini-camp. And here is what I’ve written on the Ravens. Look for more later today. But what about all the other stuff about the trip to Baltimore? Glad you asked… Want some highlights? Overall impression: The Ravens aren’t newcomers [...] -
My story: How Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome and his scouts find passionate players and fill the team with them 14 May 2012, 10:18
I arrived in Owings Mills, Md., with a simple goal for my impending story. Understand why the Ravens select the players they do in the draft. I came away with a lot more than that. After an insightful conversation with ultra-respected GM Ozzie Newsome, I think I get it. I think I understand why they are always competitive and why their players look like they’d play for free. The Ravens scout passion. As Newsome told me, while watching tape they take their eye off the ball and watch how players move when they are not involved in a play — and they learn whether a guy is going through the motions or just lives it. For those with supreme passion, [...] -
Three and out: Britt’s draft value in limbo 14 May 2012, 10:12
Kenny Britt has the tools to be a No. 1 fantasy wideout. But the possibility of having a second knee surgery is cause for some concern. -
Ravens’ Upshaw is ready to compete, but ‘there’s only one Suggs’ 13 May 2012, 11:25
The Ravens just finished up a session of rookie mini-camp here in scenic Owings Mills, Md., and a big topic of conversation was Courtney Upshaw. The second-rounder from Alabama, the Ravens highest draft pick, will be expected to come in and compete. That was the deal anyway. -
A reminder of how far the NFL rookies have to go to catch up to the veterans… 13 May 2012, 07:22
Before I jump in the car and drive to Owings Mills for Ravens rookie mini-camp, I just wanted to mention one thing that stuck in my mind from my trip to St. Louis on Friday. It was, by all accounts, a successful experience for the participants. But what does that mean? Basically, that they only began the methodical process of figuring stuff out. Seriously, I was reminded once again how far these rookies are from being ready. And it has nothing to do with talent, obviously. It’s just that being in the NFL, and thriving in the league, takes so much. Coach Jeff Fisher pointed this out when describing what he achieved following the first session. “We had a meet [...] -
Recapping this road trip: The St. Louis edition 12 May 2012, 12:56
Well, I'm flying into Baltimore as I write this, gearing up for a visit to the Ravens rookie minicamp on Sunday. That means my visit to St. Louis to check out the Rams rookies is over, though you can read about what I thought here. It was my first trip to see the Rams, and it was a good one.
